Ciri yang membedakan Eupelycosauria denganCaseasauria berdasarkan pada detil proporsi tulang tertentu di tengkoral. Termasuklah tulang subratemporal sempit (sementara caseasauria besar) dan tulang depan dengan hubungan lebih lebar ke margin atas orbit
Batang utama Eupelycosauria berisikan dua cabang berikut setelah terpisah dengan Varanopseidae dan Opiacodonthidae, yaitu
Edaphosauridae
Sphenacodontia
